Quantum electrodynamics (QED) describes the interaction of electrically charged particles with electromagnetic fields. Often cited to be the most accurate description of nature, precision tests of QED are usually performed in the perturbative regime with “weak” fields. However, if the electromagnetic fields are sufficiently intense, a perturbative description is no longer sufficient and arbitrary numbers of interaction between single charges and the external field need to be taken into account. A large portion of analytical results for particle physics processes in a laser background are within the “plane wave model”. Moreover, particle-in-cell simulations that incorporate quantum processes often do so using the “locally constant field approximation”, which is justified via this plane wave model. We discuss limitations of this model and some recent results in beyond-plane-wave calculations.
