Beschreibung

Nanophotonics, i.e. the interaction of light with nanometer sized objects, is a widespread research field with unexpected features such as sub-wavelength focusing or field enhancement. Up to now only lower light intensity has been utilized (<1014 W/cm2) offering nanoaccelerators with electron energies up to the keV level. We demonstrate nanophotonics in the relativistic realm by using 6 orders of magnitude higher light intensities than before. We observe electron bunches with multi-MeV energy that can be controlled with the waveform of the laser pulse (carrier-envelope phase). The experimental results are hinting towards accelerating fields of a few TV/m, exceeding all other technologies.
