Electron-Ion Collisions - Absolute Cross Sections for Astrophysics and Plasma Physics and Spectroscopy of Highly Charged Ions

Stefan Schippers
University of Giessen

Electron-impact ionization and electron-ion recombination are basic atomic processses that govern the charge balance in plasma. Accurate cross sections for the processes are required for being able to model and understand man-made and cosmic plasmas. In my talk I will provide and overview of past and present efforts aiming at providing benchmark cross-sections from electron-ion collision experiments at the Giessen electron-ion crossed-beams setup and at the electron coolers of heavy-ion storage rings. Moreover, the potential of cold electron beams for precision spectroscopy of highly charged ions will be pointed out  and future directions of electron-ion collision work at, in particular, CRYRING will be discussed.
