Beschreibung

Current and next-generation laser facilities provide experimental access to light-matter interactions at extreme intensities. However, theoretical understanding of this regime is haunted by the conjectured breakdown of present methods for sufficiently high intensities. I give a broad introduction to quantum electrodynamics in strong backgrounds and review recent results relating to this conjecture. In particular, I discuss two recent papers of ours, one studying the analogous conjecture in a toy model of QED (arXiv:2002.03759) and one approaching the conjecture in the context of the interplay between high intensity and high energy (arXiv:2010.03893).
