Beschreibung

At laser intensities of about 1023 W/cm2 and higher to be achieved in a few years at new laser facilities, the influence of the radiation reaction force on the dynamics of laser-driven plasmas is expected to be considerable and sometimes even dominant. We present numerical particle-in-cell simulations of the interaction of such ultraintense circularly polarized pulses with a thick opaque plasma showing that the radiation reaction force leads to an irreversible angular momentum transfer from the electromagnetic field to the plasma. This momentum transfer induces poloidal currents which generate a quasistatic magnetic field with an amplitude up to several giga-gauss. Our numerical simulations are qualitatively supported by a simple analytic model.
