Since the development of general relativity, black holes have remained of supreme interest to physicists and astronomers alike. However, their definition is strangely binary: a normal object has R > rs, a black hole has R < rs. We investigate how quantum effects give rise to a 'smoothing' of this definition, by examining how the scattering cross section of astrophysical objects changes when taking the limit R → rs.
