Automated Laser Plasma Acceleration of Electrons and Ions

Dr. Matthew Streeter
Queen’s University Belfast

Abstract:

High intensity laser plasma interactions can accelerate charged particles to high energies in a very short distance due to their extremely high electromagnetic fields. Understanding the various acceleration mechanisms is of great interest for the laser plasma community while optimising and controlling them is paramount for enabling their many applications. In this talk, I will overview work performed at the Central Laser Facility to automate the operation of laser plasma accelerators and how this approach has improved understanding of their sensitivity to initial conditions as well as provided a framework for the application machine learning optimisation techniques. I will also present a recently published [1] observation of plasma collimation of high flux proton beams which took advantage of the automated high-rep-rate setup.
