Description

Charge Radii of the Lightest Nuclei from Muonic and Ordinary Atoms

Prof. Dr. Randolf Pohl
Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz

Abstract:

The charge radii of the light isotopes Z=1...10 serve as important benchmarks for understanding of nucleon and nuclear structure, and are essential for tests of QED and the Standard Model, as well as for the determination of fundamental constants via high-precision spectroscopy of ordinary atoms and ions. Our laser spectroscopy of muonic H through He-4 has provided precision measurements of the 4 lightest nuclei. In Mainz, we're now working on measuring the triton charge radius which is the missing link at A=3 between Z=1 and 2. Meanwhile, at PSI the QUARTET collaboration is using magnetic metallic calorimeters (MMCs) for vastly improved X-ray spectroscopy of muonic Li...Ne and beyond.
