Newsletter June 2020
Dear colleagues and friends of the HI-Jena,
Welcome to the June 2020 issue of our institute newsletter. First of all, we apologize the delay of our newsletter: as at many other research institutes and universities worldwide, also at HI-Jena we went through the very difficult time of a complete lock-down in response on the COVID-19 crisis. Despite these difficult circumstances, research continued at HI-Jena as well as at its partner institutions. This is documented by the current issue of our institute newsletter; see below. Meanwhile, workshops and laboratories are again in operation under strict hygienic and safety rules.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our institute members and colleagues for their continued compliance with the necessary regulations, and are very confident that we will cope with this new and challenging situation.
Kind Regards,
Helmholtz Institute Jena
Civil construction of the additional institute’s building has started

In March 2020, civil construction of the additional institute’s building has begun. Excavation work is well underway on the site located next to the main building of the HI-Jena at Fröbelstieg 3. Construction is expected to take 24 months, and will provide the institute with additional office, seminar and laboratory space. We will periodically update you on the progress of the construction work on the HI-Jena webpage.
FAIR storage ring CRYRING ready for use

The first FAIR storage ring, the so-called CRYRING, is ready to conduct experiments for the scientific research community. CRYRING is an extremely successful ion storage ring that has enabled key research contributions in atomic and molecular physics in Stockholm for many years. It was brought to GSI and FAIR in Darmstadt as a Swedish in-kind contribution. Here it was modernized, adapted to FAIR standards and connected to the experimental storage ring ESR at GSI under the project name “CRYRING@ESR”. Along with the already existing trapping facility HITRAP, the ESR and the future high-energy storage ring HESR, CRYRING will be part of the unique portfolio of trapping and storage facilities for heavy ions of FAIR.

New Measurement Exacerbates Old Problem

Two prominent X-ray emission lines of highly charged iron have puzzled astrophysicists for decades: their measured and calculated brightness ratios always disagree. This hinders good determinations of plasma temperatures and densities. New, careful high-precision measurements, together with top-level calculations now exclude all hitherto proposed explanations for this discrepancy, and thus deepen the problem. Researchers from the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt and the Helmholtz Institute Jena (HI Jena), a branch of GSI, are also involved in the investigations. The results are now published in the prestigious “Physical Review Letters” journal.

Record compression delivers ultra-short laser pulses: New possibilities for ultra-fast physics and plasma acceleration

With the help of a special “light compressor”, a team of researchers has produced ultrashort laser pulses at DESY. In collaboration with colleagues from Sweden and France, scientists led by Christoph Heyl from DESY and the Helmholtz Institute Jena succeeded in compressing high-energy laser pulses of about one third of a millimetre in length to under a hundredth of a millimetre in just one step. “This corresponds to a factor of almost 40, a new record for a single compression stage for high-energy laser pulses,” says Heyl. Around 80 percent of the energy of the original laser pulse was retained. In a further step, the researchers compressed the pulses to only about 4 thousandths of a millimeter (micrometre), which is about one tenth of the thickness of a human hair. The team presents its work in the journal Optics Letters.
