First high-precision polarimetry experiment at the European XFEL
The quest for the purest linear polarization of X-rays originated from the idea of detecting the birefringence of vacuum – a prediction of quantum electrodynamics [1]. The feasibility of this experiment was underpinned by the realization of a polarization purity of about 10-10 by scientists from the Friedrich Schiller University and the Helmholtz Institute Jena at the synchrotron source ESRF in Grenoble a few years ago [2]. Recently, it turned out that the polarization purity of 10-10 is not a limitation set by the polarizers, but rather by the source [3]. More precisely, the limiting factor is the divergence, which is typically on the order of 10µrad for third-generation synchrotron sources. On the other hand, novel X-ray sources like the European XFEL or the upgrade of the ESRF to a diffraction-limited storage ring provide highly collimated beams and, thus, should enable polarization purities much better than 10-10.
A significant step towards the purest linear polarization was set recently during the first polarimetry experiment at the HED instrument of the European XFEL. Even though it was one of the first experiments at this instrument, the polarimeter showed an outstanding performance. The high polarization purity realized led to a complete suppression of the incoming XFEL photons. These results will be appropriately published soon and are promising for the ambitious goal of detecting the birefringence of vacuum in the next years.

News and Announcements
Helmholtz Institute Jena supports Physics & Astronomy Day of Friedrich Schiller University Jena

Update: Owing to the ongoing developments regarding the coronavirus, the event has been canceled.
The Helmholtz Institute Jena supports this year’s Day of Physics and Astronomy, which the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Jena is organizing for school classes, prospective students and the general public on March 27, 2020.
A working group around Dr. Volker Tympel and scientists from the Institute of Solid State Physics and the German Weather Service will launch a stratospheric balloon. Until reaching the planned altitude of about 100,000 ft, temperature, humidity and air pressure as well as the intensity of ionizing radiation will be continuously recorded and transmitted live to Lecture Hall 1 at Max-Wien-Platz. After an introductory lecture by Dr. Roman Forker at 11:45 a.m., interested visitors can follow the experiment until around 2 p.m.
Further information about the Day of Physics and Astronomy can be found on the website of the Faculty and in the programme leaflet (Geman only).
