Newsletter August 2019
Dear colleagues and friends of the HI Jena,
welcome to the August issue of our HI Jena newsletter.
Below you find the latest news from our institute.
We hope you had nice summer holidays as well as a nice and stimulating conference season.
Kind Regards,

The status of HILITE
Over the last year and in recent days the HILITE (High-Intensity Laser Ion Trap Experiment) Penning trap made great progress and is close to the first milestone - the provision of a well-defined ion cloud for laser experiments.

The demand for ion clouds of controllable density and shape arises from former measurements with XUV laser pulses on gas targets. Here inner shell electrons were addressed and ionised. Due to multi-electron effects in gas jet targets, the measured cross section of the interaction cannot be compared well with theoretical predictions. The possibility to even access K-shell electrons by photon fields was opened up by the enormous progress in laser development over the last years, in both the photon-energy (FLASH, European XFEL) and the peak intensity (POLARIS, JETI) regime. To even measure absolute cross sections of the non-linear laser-ion interaction, the ions must be localised in the trap centre. Hence, they have to be cooled to the sub milli-electronvolt regime. Therefore, we will apply Penning trap cooling techniques, such as resistive cooling and active feedback cooling, which will be the next step of the ion trap commissioning.
In our ongoing commissioning phase, the setup is capable to produce, select, decelerate and store carbon ions up to a charge state of five. Storage times up to 20 min for low charge states and still several minutes for hydrogen-like carbon have been achieved. This can be verified by the detection of the corresponding ion motion frequency in a non-destructive way as shown in figure 2.

In autumn we will prepare the setup for the transport to Hamburg. A beam time was granted in February 2020 at the FLASH X-ray laser facility at DESY to study multi-photon absorption and transition-isolated excitations with subsequent ionisation in simple ionic systems.

HGS-HIRe SUMMER STUDENT PROGRAM at GSI / FAIR
GSI Helmholtz Center, Darmstadt, Germany
The Summer Program is offered to students on the advanced undergraduate level (Bachelor, Master or Diploma) in physics and related natural science and engineering disciplines from Europe and GSI/FAIR partner countries. The majority of the offered projects will concern investigations and preparations towards our future project FAIR and its scientific experiments.
It would be nice, if you can bring this option to the attention of qualified students in lectures and seminars, etc. or privately or indirectly by informing your colleagues and collaboration members.
Further information for applicants can be found on this link: https://hgs-hire.de/summer-program
Poster: https://theory.gsi.de/stud-pro/HGS-HIRe/Poster2019.pdf
Applications and recommendations must reach us before FEBRUARY 15.
