Detailed studies of laser-driven ionization of low-charged ions at HI-Jena

Since a few months the working group of Prof. Paulus is running laser-driven ionization experiments starting with ions. These are prepared in the ion beam apparatus sketched below. Careful collimation of the ions coming from the ion source results in a transversally very cold beam such that the deflection of the ions by the laser during the ionization process can be measured. At moderately relativistic intensities, we have ionized Ne+ up to charge states as high as Ne6+ and Xe1+ to Xe10+.

The figure below shows the momentum distribution of Ne2+generated by circularly polarized laser pulses at an intensity of 1017 W/cm2. The ions are deflected by the laser during the ionization process and recorded on a time and position-resolving detector. The depicted momentum distribution provides detailed information on the ionization dynamics.
News and Announcements
The CRYRING arrived at GSI as the first storage ring for the FAIR facility.
From the Manne-Siegbahn-Laboratory in Stockholm the first storage ring has been delivered to the future FAIR accelerator facility. The so called CRYRING has a diameter of 18 meters and will at first be assembled in cooperation with GSI at the existing GSI facility to conduct experiments and machine tests. In the long run it is planned to use it for research in atomic physics with slow antiprotons at FAIR. CRYRING is an in-kind contribution of Sweden to the FAIR facility, that is built in international cooperation at GSI.

Cooperation agreement of the Research School APS and the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research for FAIR officially finalized.
The Research School for Advanced Photon Science (RS-APS) of the Helmholtz Insitute Jena is now an official cooperation partner of the well-established Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research for FAIR (HGS-HIRe). Members of RS-APS have the possibility to take part in the various scientific and soft skill training courses offered by HGS-HIRe. Moreover, in the near future joint lecture weeks of both research schools will be organized.
