Dynamically Assisted Nuclear Fusion

Abstract:

Although quantum tunneling is usually taught in the first lecture course on quantum mechanics, our understanding is still far from complete, especially in time-dependent scenarios. We consider the enhancement (or suppression) of quantum tunneling through a potential barrier by an additional time-dependent electric field. As a prominent example, we apply our findings to the enhancement of nuclear fusion by an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) field.
