Description

The interaction of matter with high-intensity lasers is traditionally described by modelling the laser as a plane wave background field. This description becomes invalid (i) at ultra-high intensities requiring strong focussing and (ii) whenever there is substantial back-reaction on the external field yielding e.g. beam depletion. I will describe a number of theoretical attempts aimed at improving the current methodology to deal with these rather extreme, but soon experimentally feasible, conditions.
